I have always believed that it is never too late to do the right thing. Senator Barack Obama proved that Saturday, when he announced that he and his wife have resigned from the Church where controversial sermons by his former pastor and other ministers created a political nightmare. The question is, did Obama resign for the right reasons. Why does it matter? It matters because this, like so many other events, speak to the character of an individual. If Obama resigned from Trinity United Church of Christ because his beliefs are in conflict with some of the controversial opinions expressed in recent months, then it was a courageous act. If Obama left the Church solely for political reasons, than he is the worst thing you can be; just another regular politician. Here is Obama's reasons in his own words; "We don't want to have to answer for everything that's stated in the church, we also don't want the church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes." I suppose there is a nobility to the idea of protecting his old Church from the media spotlight, but I don't know if Obama went far enough to demonstrate his difference of opinion with some of the more controversial remarks. In other words, I feel Obama needed to say something like; I am leaving the Church in large part due to my personal beliefs that are in direct conflict with many of the opinions held my the leadership of Trinity United Church of Christ. In fairness to Senator Obama, he did lightly condemn the most recent remarks of a guest speaker at his former Church, Rev Pfleger. Obama said; "That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn't reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause". Rev. Pflegers remarks were about Senator Hillary Clinton and to say that they were unkind would be an understatement. When comparing Obama's soft glove rebuke of Rev. Pfleger, to Rev. Pfleger's hateful remarks about Clinton, again I find it lacking. Clinton supporters are correct in pointing out that if that was a member of Clinton's Church attacking Obama, the outrage would be all over the media. Obama has the liberal media in his pocket, but ultimately the voters will decide this election and they are smarter than you think. Obama has come out in the past to speak against what he perceives as "political stunts". With his weak condemnations of the outrageous statements from his Church, Obama's resignation appears to me to be just another "political stunt".
