Champion Of The Second Amendment

Charlton Heston died Saturday Night at his home in Beverly Hills at the age of 84. The legendary actor was more closely associated with his role as the head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in recent years. With his passing, the debate over possession of firearms in the United States will be on the minds of people throughout our great land. In my mind there is little to debate. The Second Amendment of The Constitution reads "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." We the People......that's us. I understand the document is centuries old, but this part, the first ten Amendments to our Constitution is known as The Bill Of Rights. Our Constitution is the beating heart of our Country and The Bill Of Rights it's life's blood. It is no less then the foundation of our Democracy and should not be easily dismissed. The Founding Fathers left the provision of Amendments to The Constitution. In this way we can make changes to suit our time and circumstances. While it is sensible to us today to define what qualifies as "arms", we must not infringe upon the rights given to us under the Second Amendment. Common Sense dictates that we do not want "The People" to possess tanks or rocket launchers. I would even argue against assault weapons. Rifles, handguns, and shotguns, would seem to constitute reasonable personal "arms" protected by our Constitution. I know that there are many tragedies associated with legal firearms. The person whom did not properly secure their firearm that led to the death of a child, while an unspeakable tragedy, does not invalidate the rights of responsible gun owners. The Constitution is the fabric of our Great Nation. If we pull out to many threads we risk it's unraveling.

Here is a link to some interesting statistics on Guns and crime.
