Jobs Americans Will Not Do

One of the arguments most often put forth by advocates who favor liberal policies on immigration is that there are some jobs Americans just will not do. These are usually low paying, labor intensive jobs with no benefits. While I am not suggesting that Americans are afraid of hard work, I can certainly understand why people would not want to work real hard and not be able to provide for their families as a result of that labor. So why doesn't anybody want the Vice-President job in 2008? The pay is good, about $208,100 a year and the work is not real hard. John Edwards said yesterday that he would not accept the VP spot if offered by Clinton or Obama. Al Gore has no interest in fulfilling that role again as he prepares for Earth Day 2008. Barack Obama himself said he would never consider playing second fiddle. It's the Presidency or bust for him. As it turns out everybody is not jumping at the chance to be VP for some pretty good reasons. The Vice-President really has no power to speak of. All of the real power is held by the President. The second in command stands a four year death watch only assuming power if the President dies or is incapacitated. The Vice President does technically preside over the Senate but only really shows up on the odd chance of a 50 to 50 tie to cast a vote. The remainder of the time the VP has a stand in known as the President Pro Tempore which is usually the senior Senator of the Party in control. The Vice-President does not even get to live in the White House. I guess they can't find a place for the VP in any of the 132 rooms. The VP does get to announce the results of the Electoral College. So back in 2001 Al Gore had the privilege of announcing his opponent George Bush. So the job kind of sucks a little I guess.
John Nance Garner, FDR's VP, said that the Vice President's job was "not worth a warm bucket of piss". As if that is not enough John Adams said " "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." The Candidates running for President had better get to hunting for some VP prospects before we have to amend the Constitution to allow an illegal immigrant to fill yet another job that Americans will not do.
