When Racism Will End

Race is a volatile subject at any time and this year's Presidential Election is adding fuel to the fire. I do not think any reasonable person would tell you that racism belongs only to the past now. It is still alive and well In America. Like all things, it will end; but when? To answer that question I thought about how far we have come and the vast distance we still must travel. Today marks the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King's assignation. We have made long strides towards achieving this Great Man's dream and vision for the future. Today it is important to have the dialog on race and continue to do what we can to improve. Tomorrow the elderly people on both sides of the issue who are stuck in a time will pass on. With them their bigotry and the bitterness of mistreatment alike will die. As each generation passes, we will continue toward racial harmony and the memories of our shameful past will not disappear but they will fade. So unfortunately for right now, we must be patient because time is the answer. The true end of racism will come in a few generations. My children view race differently then I did, my parents, grandparents and so on...... Perhaps their grandchildren will live in a world where people "will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Well maybe it is all just a dream. But it was his dream and now it is ours. Our children will live to see that dream realized. Thank you Dr. King for your courage.
