Forced Into Change

Businesses and people are trying to find new and creative ways to cope with the soaring price of gas. Changing our habits and doing with less, are things that Americans do not excel at, after all this is supposed to be the land of plenty. One idea that many private business are on board with, is the four day work week. The result is saving each employee one days commute. Some businesses are stepping up efforts to convert workers from the office, to working at home or telecommuting. These measures have the added benefit of being a "perk" for employees, beyond the financial savings. I was surprised to learn that some school districts are implementing a four day school week. After some thought, it seems to make plenty of sense. The districts will save on utilities by closing the schools for one day a week, but will really save big on transportation costs. It is good to see my fellow Americans dealing with the gas crisis in a positive and creative manner, but it can only go so far. Americans will only display a limited amount of flexibility on lifestyle issues. After too many compromises, we will not feel like we are living the American way of life.
