A Tibetan woman took the Olympic torch the last steps to the top of Mt. Everest on Thursday. The climbers then shouted; "Long live Tibet!" and "Long live Beijing!", for the TV cameras in what was clearly just Chinese propaganda. As one protester in Nepal put it; "We condemn the taking of the torch to Everest because by this China wants to show that Tibet is a part of it". After a recent meeting, an envoy to the Dalai Lama said on Thursday talks with Chinese negotiators were positive. Perhaps there is hope that the situation in Tibet will improve given the worldwide attention and the Olympic Games. If not we must be prepared to follow the European Nations who have already announced or suggested a boycott of the games.
