The Odd Couple Part II

In the earlier article "The Odd Couple", I talked about the TV commercial for Al Gore's green organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection. The commercial featured the Reverends Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson together in a bid for greater environmental awareness. Politically, Rev. Sharpton and Rev. Robertson represent opposite ends of the spectrum. The message they are sending is that although we may disagree on other issues, we can come together for our environmental concerns. I thought it was a great idea and wonderful to see that kind of cooperation. The latest commercial features former Republican Speaker Of The House Newt Gingrich and current Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The pair made the same case for cooperation between opposing political Parties and ideologies on the issue of climate change. I was again stunned to see the negative reaction in the media and the Blogosphere to this effort. Each side is accusing their speaker of sleeping with the enemy, while many conservatives feel that Gingrich is legitimizing an exaggerated climate change issue. I applaud this bipartisan effort to work together for the environment, and do I dare to hope that it can lead to cooperation on other issues? I do not understand why there is a segment of the population so opposed to any "green" efforts. What is the downside of taking a little better care of our only Planet?
