Infringing On Our Rights

I have already done some posts in the past few months about Government infringing on the rights of the American people. Rights that are guaranteed in our Constitution and have been defended time and again, spilling our most precious blood. Rights that are not to be taken lightly or for granted. Rights that breathe life into this Government of the people, by the people, and for the people. This time it is not Government encroaching on our rights, but rather a private employer. I would argue however, that if the law permits such actions by private employers, then Government is culpable as well. Thirty-nine Whirlpool Corp. employees have been suspended for smoking after they declared they were nonsmokers on health insurance forms. In doing so, the workers saved 500 dollars on their health insurance premiums as Whirlpool requires its employees who smoke to pay higher health insurance premiums. First of all, I do not condone lying or falsifying records of any kind. So in that regard the 39 employees were wrong. That said, I feel that there are larger issues that come into play here. First, everybody should pay the same insurance premium. I understand that smokers pay more because of a risk based assessment but feel that this is unfair. For example, what about the guy who drinks alcohol heavily and is destroying his liver? What about the guy who eats bacon everyday for breakfast and is obese? Do they pay higher premiums like the smokers do? If the powers that be had their way, they would I assure you. What if some of those 39 suspended workers took up smoking after they filled out those forms in the past. Are they required to notify "Big Brother" employer? Should the workers go to the boss and say "even though it's none of your god damn business I started smoking. The good news is that I conquered that chronic masturbation problem". How far will employers be permitted to pry into their employees lives to obtain information like this. Sometimes I think that it will not be a foreign invader that conquers our nation, but rather we will give away so many of our rights that our forefathers would not recognize this Country as America. Any rule or law is not absolute if the people rise in opposition of them. We the people have forgotten this and the time has come to stand shoulder to shoulder. Lest we risk the government of the people, by the people, for the people, perishing from the Earth.
